World No Tobacco Day (WNTD)

smokingEvery year on May 31st World No Tobacco Day is observed.  The goal is to inspire people around the world to abstain for 24 hours from using all forms of tobacco.  The member states (which includes the United States) of the World Health Organization created WNTD in 1987. Aside from the immediate financial cost of smoking (the national average for a pack of cigarettes including state and federal taxes is $6.16) there are the health costs.

While nicotine is addictive many of the health effects from tobacco use come from the other chemicals used in cigarettes.  Tobacco smoking can lead to lung cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis while increasing the risk of heart disease.

The United States became the first nation in the world to require a health warning on cigarette packages.  That year was 1966.

In June 2011 the Food and Drug Administration released new warning signs to be included on all cigarette advertisement and packaging.

  • WARNING: Cigarettes are addictive.
  • WARNING: Tobacco smoke can harm your children.
  • WARNING: Cigarettes cause fatal lung disease.
  • WARNING: Cigarettes cause cancer.
  • WARNING: Cigarettes cause strokes and heart disease.
  • WARNING: Smoking during pregnancy can harm your baby.
  • WARNING: Smoking can kill you.
  • WARNING: Tobacco smoke causes fatal lung disease in nonsmokers.
  • WARNING: Quitting smoking now greatly reduces serious risks to your health.

Despite all the warnings people still smoke, which they are free to do. Though with increasing financial and health costs.  Some employers add a smoking surcharge for employer provided insurance for those employees who smoke.  Save money by eliminating the cost of cigarettes, increased health insurance premiums and increased health care.

If you want to save money take the opportunity to quit today on World No Tobacco Day.  You can find more information on quitting at smokefree.gov.
