Bankruptcy Filers Target of Scam

ScamsScammers are targeting bankruptcy filers in multiple states using the personal information of the debtor from their filing. They are posing as attorneys to get the unsuspecting victims to immediately wire money to satisfy a debt.

Under no circumstance would a bankruptcy attorney or staff member telephone a client and ask them to wire transfer money immediately to satisfy a debt. A bankruptcy attorney or staff would never threaten arrest if a debt is not paid.

Bankruptcy filers in Vermont and Virginia report to have received calls. The Attorney General for Vermont says scammers are using software to “spoof” the Caller ID system so the call appears to be coming from the phone line of the consumer’s bankruptcy attorney. These calls come late in the evening or during non-business hours to make it difficult for the intended victims to verify the call by contacting their attorney.

Consumers receiving this kind of call are advised to hang up and contact their bankruptcy attorney as soon as possible. Do NOT give any personal or financial account information to the caller and do NOT send them any money.
