Joe’s Crab Shack Closes a 41 Locations Without Warning

joes crab shackLast week both customers and employees were surprised to find the restaurant had closed 41 locations without warning.

Employees showed up for work to find they were locked out. A sign in the window informed them that the location was closed permanently.

The company has not provided a list of closed locations. Media reports indicate 2 closings in Oklahoma and 10 in Texas.

Joe’s Crab Shack started as a single restaurant in 1994 and grew to 139 locations by 2014. That number dropped to 112 earlier this year according to the restaurant’s website. That number has now dropped to 72.

The parent company of Joe’s Crab Shack is Ignite Restaurant Group. Ignite which also owned Brick House Tavern + Tap filed for bankruptcy back in June.

Landry’s Inc. purchased Joe’s Crab Shack in 1994 when it was a single restaurant and grew it into a popular chain before selling it off. On August 17 Landry’s won the bankruptcy auction to buy Ignite Restaurant Group for $57 million. The purchase includes both chains. Landry’s has a plan of selling the Brick House Tavern + Tap chain and paring down the number of Joe’s Crab Shack locations to about 60.

If there is only one Joe’s Crab Shack in your area and you have a gift card you may want to use it now as your local Joe’s Crab Shack may soon be shuttered.
